Avs try to close out homestand perfect against Coyotes

Hockey Betting Lines

02/12/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Colorado Avalanche will attempt to record a perfect four-game homestand when the Northwest Division co-leaders take on the Phoenix Coyotes in a showdown between playoff hopefuls tonight at the Pepsi Center.

The Avalanche posted their third victory on this residency and fourth straight overall win at home with Wednesday's 4-3 come-from-behind triumph over Atlanta. After erasing a 3-1 third-period deficit with two late goals, Kyle Cumiskey scored just nine seconds into overtime to complete the thrilling rally.

Cumiskey carried the puck into the Thrashers' zone after teammate Paul Stastny won the opening faceoff and stickhandled through the middle before firing a shot past Atlanta goaltender Johan Hedberg. The goal was the quickest in overtime in franchise history.

"I saw an opening so I jumped in there and it worked out," said Cumiskey. "I don't know what came over me; I just took what they gave me pretty much and it worked out."

The Avs overcame their two-goal disadvantage on goals by Chris Stewart and Chris Durno, the latter coming with just 5:29 remaining in regulation. Stastny was credited with three assists on the night to help back a 33-save performance from Colorado netminder Craig Anderson.

Wednesday's verdict gives the Avalanche 74 points on the season, five more than the club accumulated during a dreadful 2008-09 campaign in which it placed last in the Western Conference, and enter tonight's play tied with Vancouver for the Northwest's top spot.

Phoenix has also turned its fortunes around in 2009-10. After finishing well out of the postseason race with a mere 79 points last season, the Coyotes have already matched that total after Wednesday's 3-2 win at Minnesota. The team presently stands fourth in the West standings and appears well on its way to a first postseason berth since 2001-02.

Radim Vrbata's team-leading 20th goal of the season staked Phoenix to a 3-1 lead 5:41 into the third period, and Ilya Bryzgalov made it stand up by stopping 29 shots to earn his 32nd victory in 2009-10.

Matthew Lombardi also scored for Phoenix, two days after the forward amassed a career-best five points (2 goals, 3 assists) to propel the Coyotes to a 6-1 rout of Edmonton on Monday.

Wednesday's win was the eighth in the past nine games for the surging Coyotes, who wrap up their pre-Olympic break slate with a home matchup with Dallas on Saturday.

"We're playing with some confidence here," Lombardi told the Coyotes' official site after the game. "Down 1-0, we didn't get nervous, we didn't start changing the way we wanted to play. We just kept going."

Colorado will visit Los Angeles on Saturday in its final outing before the NHL's extended hiatus for the upcoming Winter Games.

The Avalanche handed Phoenix a 4-1 defeat in Denver on November 4 in the only previous meeting between these teams this season. The Coyotes are still 6-1-2 in their last nine encounters with Colorado and have prevailed in four of their six most recent visits to the Pepsi Center.

New York, NY – October 3, 2007 – The dress rehearsal is over! The NHL preseason has ended and now that fans have had a glimpse of what is to come it is time to hit the book! Stanley Cup odds are live at MySportsbook.com, the world’s largest online sportsbook and casino.

The Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings remain on top of the odds charts after an impressive start in the preseason. Betting lines opened for both teams at 6-1 in June. Since then the Sens have fallen to 7-1 and the Red Wings are now caught in a pack including the defending champion Carolina Hurricanes, the San Jose Sharks and the Anaheim Ducks, all at 10-1.

MySportsbook.com has also posted props on each team’s point total for the regular season. The Senators lead the charge at 108.5 followed by the Ducks at 106.5. Detroit will attempt a repeat for the prize as the Red Wings are deadlocked with the Predators at 104.5 a piece. The temporary loss of highly touted rookie Evgeni Malkin puts a lot of pressure on the stick of assistant captain Sidney Crosby - his lowly Pittsburgh Penguins are listed at 71.5.

Even if bettors are not brave enough to put their money on the underdog, an early bet on the favorites at sportsbook.com tends to produce bigger payouts than a mid-season wager. Placing a $1,000 bet last summer on the Detroit Red Wings or Ottawa Senators would have paid out to $8,000 and $10,000 respectively, opposed to a $2,500 or $3,000 payout at the beginning of the playoffs.
