Roddick overcomes Stakhovsky in Cincinnati

In other action involving seeds, No. 13 Jurgen Melzer of Austria handled Colombian qualifier Santiago Giraldo 6-1, 6-4 and Swiss slugger Stanislas Wawrinka upended No. 14 Spaniard Nicolas Almagro 6-3, 6-3.

Rising American Sam Querrey got past German Philipp Petzschner 6-1, 6-4, while American qualifier Taylor Dent advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 handling of Spaniard Feliciano Lopez. Dent is rewarded with a second-rounder against another Spaniard, world No. 1 superstar Rafael Nadal.

Additional Day-2 wins came for Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci, France's Paul-Henri Mathieu, Dutchman Thiemo de Bakker, German Michael Berrer and Serb Viktor Troicki, who doused struggling Czech Radek Stepanek 7-5, 6-1. Berrer bested former top-10 star Tommy Robredo 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 7-6 (10-8). Troicki's second- round opponent will be second-seeded world No. 3 star Novak Djokovic.

Nadal and Djokovic are joined in this week's field by Roger Federer and Andy Murray, who upset Federer in Sunday's Canadian Masters final. Federer beat the two-time runner-up Djokovic in last year's Cincy finale and also titled here in 2005 and 2007. Murray was the winner here in 2008.

The 2010 Cincinnati champ will claim $443,500.
