Pirates continue to handle Cubs

Baseball Betting Lines

05/31/2010 - Pittsburgh, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Bobby Crosby knocked in the go-ahead run with a single in the eighth inning, as the Pittsburgh Pirates edged the Chicago Cubs, 2-1, in the opener of a three-game series at PNC Park.

Garrett Jones went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored for the Pirates, who snapped a five-game skid.

Ross Ohlendorf had his best outing of the season, giving up one run on three hits in a season-high seven innings. He also fanned a season-best six batters and walked two, but remains winless in six starts. Evan Meek (3-1) pitched a scoreless eighth to pick up the win.

Geovany Soto drove in the lone run for the Cubs, who have dropped four straight games in Pittsburgh within the same season for the first time since 1996 (July 3-September 22). Chicago has lost six of its seven matchups with the Pirates this season.

Randy Wells allowed just three hits in five scoreless frames, but did not factor into the decision. Sean Marshall (5-2) gave up the game-winning run in the eighth to take the loss.

Marshall took the mound in the bottom of the eighth with the score tied at one. Jones hit a one-out double to get things started. After Lastings Milledge grounded out, Ryan Doumit was intentionally walked. Pinch-hitter Crosby stepped to the plate and lined the ball into center to plate Jones. Andrew Cashner came in from the bullpen to record the final out of the frame.

Octavio Dotel worked around a two-out single in the ninth to record his 11th save of the season.

The Cubs drew first blood with a run in the second. Alfonso Soriano hit a one- out triple and came around to score on Soto's groundout.

Pittsburgh tied the game in the sixth on Jones' homer to right off James Russell.

Chicago failed to take advantage of a great scoring chance in the top of the eighth. Meek started the inning by walking Marlon Byrd, who stole second and moved to third on a groundout with two outs. Mike Fontenot then hit a dribbler down the third base line that Andy LaRoche picked up and threw quickly to first for the out.
