11/22/2006 - Miami, FL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Still in the hunt for the ACC's Atlantic Division title, the 18th- ranked Boston College Eagles head to the Sunshine State to close out the regular season with a showdown at the Orange Bowl against the Miami Hurricanes on Thanksgiving. Tom O'Brien's team is trying to win 10 games for just the third time in school history and comes into this contest with a full head of steam, after destroying the Maryland Terrapins in College Park last weekend, 38-16. The Eagles are tied with Wake Forest atop the division standings at 5-2, but the Demon Deacons hold the tie- breaker, so BC needs to win and have Wake Forest lose this week against the Terps to claim the division title and spot in the ACC Championship game. Larry Coker could be on borrowed time in Coral Gables, as he has seemingly lost control of his team in 2006. The Hurricanes are a disappointing 5-6 on the season, including a horrific 2-5 mark in conference play. To make matters worse, the team is dragging an unheard of four-game losing streak into the season-finale. Only a win on Thursday will allow Miami to earn a bowl berth for the ninth straight year. Miami has dominated this series, winning 14 straight and 22 of the previous 25 meetings overall. The 'Canes haven't lost to Boston College since 1984, the famed "Hail Flutie" game. This is the first meeting between these two teams as ACC foes.
The Eagles were able to churn out 373 yards of total offense in the big win over Maryland last weekend. It has been a solid mix of the run and the pass that has kept the opposition guessing this year. Quarterback Matt Ryan has been efficient under center, completing 62.1 percent of his passes, for 2,531 yards with 14 TDs and seven interceptions. Kevin Challenger and Tony Gonzalez have been a solid one-two punch in the vertical game. Challenger leads the team in receptions (43) and receiving yards (488), followed closely by Gonzalez (36 receptions, for 422 yards). Both players have scored five times. The ground game has its own dynamic duo in tailbacks L.V. Whitworth (770 yards and four TDs) and Andre Callender (535 yards and two TDs).
The BC defense showed its big play capabilities last week against Maryland, scoring three times itself. National Defensive Player of the Week Jolonn Dunbar scored two of those touchdowns, as the junior linebacker had a stellar outing. On the season, this unit has been very good, limiting foes to just 14.8 ppg, showing a particular penchant for stopping the run (92.3 ppg). Dunbar has gotten the job done all season long and currently leads the team in tackles (78), with one sack, one interception and two fumble recoveries. Veteran safety Jamie Silva (54 tackles, 5.5 TFLS) and cornerback DeJuan Tribble (44 tackles) have made their share of big plays as well with four interceptions each. Sophomore LB Kevin Akins (7.5 TFLs, team-high 6.5 sacks) and freshman tackle Austin Giles (7.5 TFLs, 5.5 sacks) are two of the more exciting youngsters on the roster.
The years of Miami lighting up the scoreboard seem like an eon ago, as the Hurricanes have definitely struggled offensively in 2006. The team is averaging a mere 19.7 ppg this year, while moving the chains to the tune of 320.7 yards of total offense. Sophomore QB Kirby Freeman has taken over the reins of this offense now and has completed 55.5 percent of his passes in limited action, for 419 yards with four TDs and four interceptions. Wideout Lance Leggett (36 receptions, for 574 yards and three TDs) and tight end Greg Olsen (34 receptions, for 388 yards and on TD) are the top options in the vertical game, but both have suffered from a lack of consistency under center. Freshman tailback Javarris James has taken over the duties in the backfield in 2006 and has done a decent job, averaging 5.2 yards per carry and amassing 722 yards and three TDs on the season.
It has certainly not been the Miami defense's fault for the team's woes this season. The unit remains one of the better statistical squads in the country, allowing just 15.2 ppg, on a mere 257.5 yards of total offense (eighth nationally). The shocking death of defensive end Bryan Pata certainly has to be weighing on this unit, but the team has still performed well defensively. All-American safety Brandon Meriweather leads the team in tackles (76) and is a mainstay in the secondary. Linebacker Jon Beason (73 tackles, 7.0 TFLs, 1.5 sacks) has been solid, while up front, the players to look out for are sophomore end Calais Campbell (69 tackles) and senior tackle Kareem Brown (46 tackles), Campbell leads the team in both TFLs (15) and sacks (nine), while Brown is second in both categories (8.0 TFLs, 6.5 sacks).
The Eagles are bowl eligible for the eighth straight year, but have their sights set on a BCS bid. To do so, they will have to get through a team and a coach in desperation mode. That probably won't be a problem for BC.

MySportsbook.com favors Bears, Bengals, Chargers and Colts to remain perfect
LAS VEGAS , Sept. 28 - Two big match-ups of undefeated teams have fans salivating at the Week Four schedule in the NFL. The Chicago Bears stifling defense looks to provide a less than hospitable welcome to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night in a battle of two 3-0 teams in the NFC conference. In the AFC, the San Diego Chargers (2-0) head to Maryland to face the surprising Baltimore Ravens (3-0) as both try to keep pace atop the conference standings. Betting Lines makers at MySportsbook.com, online sportsbook and casino, have set the Bears as 3.5 point favorites while the Chargers are a 2.5 point bet.
Of the three remaining undefeated teams, only one, New Orleans, enters this week's game as an underdog. Despite an emotional and resounding win over Atlanta on Monday night, the Saints are a 7.5 point underdog against the struggling Carolina Panthers. Indianapolis looks to stay perfect when they face the New York Jets as a 9 point road favorite while the Cincinnati Bengals are a 6 point favorite at home to the New England Patriots.
Six teams enter the week still looking for their first win, with a seventh, Tampa Bay, on a bye week. The prospect of dropping another game would not bode well for a potential playoff run. Since 1990, just three teams -- the 1992 Chargers, 1995 Detroit Lions and 1998 Buffalo Bills -- have overcome losing their first three games of the season to earn a postseason berth. And only the Chargers managed to accomplish the feat after starting 0-4.
