08/15/2010 - Mason, OH (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Kim Clijsters stormed back following a rain delay late in the second set to defeat Maria Sharapova in the final of the Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open.
The fourth-seeded Belgian rallied past Sharapova, the 10th seed, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 in 2 1/2 hours.
The Russian had her third match point with a 6-2, 5-3 lead in the second set. However, Clijsters stayed alive prior to a rain delay that lasted 74 minutes.
The Belgian came back onto the court with a new attitude, winning the first three games to take a 6-5 edge. Clijsters went on to win the set in a tiebreaker, forcing a decisive third set.
Each player held serve through the first two games of the final set. Clijsters then broke Sharapova's serve to begin a string of four consecutive games won. The Belgian cruised from there to her third title of the year.
This was Clijsters' first tournament since a quarterfinal loss to Vera Zvonareva at Wimbledon. She sat out most of the clay-court season and missed the French Open during the spring because of a left foot injury.
Clijsters claimed her 38th career WTA singles crown with Sunday's win. She also moved past Monica Seles (28) to individually hold the fourth most hard court titles in the Open Era.
The 23-year-old Sharapova was trying to win her third final of the season. She has 22 titles in her career.
Clijsters owns a 5-3 record against Sharapova, who had won the previous three meetings between these two former top-ranked players. The two stars were facing each other for the first time since the semifinals of the 2007 Australian Open.
The Belgian took home $350,000.
